Prominent Bridgewater horseman Colin Redwood has been selected to represent Australia in the World Amateur Drivers Championship in Italy. With the series held exclusively for trotters, Redwood, 69, member of Victoria’s most famous trotting family, was an obvious choice given his family’s renowned affiliation with the squaregaiter and the fact he no longer holds a professional drivers licence. Ironically, Redwood will be in Italy when his family gathers to celebrate the 21st running of Australia’s most famous juvenile trotting feature, the ANZ Redwood Classic – a race named in honour of his late father Hugh, on July 23 at Maryborough. Redwood first drove in 1954 and since that time has piloted approximately 60 winners including back-to-back Easter Trotters Cups with Rockin Dale at Harold Park in 1973-74, before finishing fourth on the same trotter in the 1976 Inter Dominion Grand Final. He is best known these days as a trainer having prepared over 200 winners since taking out his licence in the mid-1970’s. A farmer and former bridge builder, Redwood prepares a team of seven horses, predominantly trotters, from his training base in central Victoria. The series will commence on July 18 and will consist of 9 races spanning three meetings. In a format which is considered quite strange in this country,the races contested will carry full tote betting status and will be the feature element of the meetings at which they are programmed. Australia will be wonderfully well represented by COLIN REDWOOD,a farmer from Bridgewater,in the picturesque Loddon Valley of Victoria.COLIN is a hobby breeder,trainer,and now, in his 70th year,a fill in driver for his son DARREN. The REDWOOD family are well known for their preference for the trotting as opposed to the pacing gait,with the prestigious "REDWOOD CLASSIC" ,a memorial to COLINS father,HUGH.
