Drivers profile by Kimberly Rinker, Maywood Park/Chicago

Gavin Cook, 51, will wear the striking black silks with the silver fern that represent his native New Zealand. This year, the Christchurch, N.Z. resident has scored a 1-3-2 record from 14 starts with $10,923 in earnings in 2008, boosting his career totals to a 3-8-7 record from 84 lifetime starts and $32,344.

Cook—now a retired restaurateur--was one of the first Amateur harness drivers to be licensed in New Zealand’s South Island. He won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in 2007, and works tirelessly for the New Zealand Amateur Driving Administration, coordinating much of the organizations activities and harness driving causes.

Gavin has been actively involved in harness racing for the past 30 years and with the introduction of Amateur Driving into New Zealand in 2003 the opportunity came to increase his involvement.

This opportunity coincided nicely with the sale of his chain of pizza stores, which allowed him to pursue his passion of breeding, training and driving harness horses from his 30acre farm in Christchurch.

Gavin was the inaugural Canterbury champion in 2004 and the New Zealand champion in 2007. He also works actively at the administrative level being the past President of CADA and also a board member of NZADA plus also organizing and running the Amateur Drivers training courses conducted in his home region.

Rounding out his experience has been two goodwill driving trips. In 2005 it was racing in Washington and New York. Then in 2006 it was off to Wales where he drove his first two international winners.
