Monticello, NY --- When the World Cup of Amateur Racing gets underway in
the United States later this season, world class amateur drivers Alle
Lohman of the Czech Repulic and Fred Handelaar of the Netherlands will
be among the 12 gentleman drivers who will be competing.
Though he was born in Amsterdam, Holland, Alle Loman will represent the
Czech Republic in the World Cup since he’s been living there since 1996.
He won the Czech Amateur Drivers’ Championship in 1997 and 1998 and over
the years has enjoyed tremendous success as an amateur driver.
In his new homeland, Loman has won some of the Czech Republic’s premier
races including the Czech Derby, St Leger and Slovak Derby with his
homebred mare Cabipaan Kort, who earned that country’s honor as Trotter
of the Year in 1997.
Loman, who has 73 lifetime driving victories, is a private businessman
mainly dealing in carpets and furniture and by his own admission is also
very busy in the horse business.
Married in the Czech Republic in 2003, Loman’s other hobbies include
flying, fishing, parachuting and football (soccer). He claims that his
greatest fan is his 84-year-old mother, who still lives in the
Netherlands.
Fred Handelaar, who will represent the Dutch in the World Cup, is one of
Europe’s most outstanding amateur drivers. He is currently the Amateur
Champion in Holland and over the years he has won that honor 17 times.
He also has been the European Amateur Champion two times.
A seasoned amateur reinsman, Handelaar represented the Netherlands in
the World Cup in 1988 in the USA and Canada; in 1998 in Canada; in 2002
in Denmark; and in 2006 in Italy.
A banker by trade, Handelaar is considered the best amateur driver ever
in the Netherlands and he currently has 512 lifetime driving victories.
Twice he won the German Amateur Championship in Berlin.
For the second time in the past 20 years the World Cup of Amateur Racing
will be contested on American soil and the competition is slated to get
underway on May 16 at Maywood Park.
